The FA Cup

No doubt Sir Pete will be happy with today's result and progression into the next round of the cup. We did it in a fair bit of style too with a fine 5-1 victory against Northern League opposition which is always tricky whatever division they come from.

Hoggy got things under way with an opener to steady any nerves we may have had after a good early showing from Horden. Bods popped up to net the second and everything looked to be plain sailing. Unfortunately we let them back into the game with a bit of sloppy play on the touchline and this seemed to give them some heart.

After the break, Horden looked to come back into the game but a free kick from Ash Allanson put the lead back to two goals. The free kick came from a handball outside of the area by the Horden keeper who, I thought, was unlucky to see red. It was a definite handball as I was in line with the 18 yard box but I didn't think it was denying a goal scoring opportunity (none of this "last man" mallarkey!!!) but that's just me and I know we've had our keeper sent off for similar in the past.

Hoggy then got our fourth soon afterwards and a fifth was added by Ash Allanson to conclude the scoring.

A satisfying result on a fine summer afternoon and I have to say well done to the lads with what could have been a potential banana skin of a tie.

bridlington town vs pontefract

Although we came out as 3-1 winners, the man-of-the-match by far and away was Mark Wilberforce. If not for Wilber's heroics we could have been on the end of an embarrassing defeat to lower level opposition just before going into the more important FA Cup tie on Saturday.

We started well enough sharing equal possession with Ponte but after 13 minutes we were unable to clear the ball from the danger area leaving space for one of their players to slot into the bottom right hand corner leaving Wilber with no chance. We were quite ineffective from then on falling foul to the long ball over the top and some decent closing down play that allowed us little or no time on the ball. It was 25 minutes before Steve Lyons made had our first attempt on target but his header went straight to the keeper. More of the same followed and if it wasn't for Wilberforce's fantastic save just before half time, we would have been going in 2 down and to be fair, you could argue that Ponte well deserved it.

Gary and Phil obviously gave the boys a talking to at half time but again Wilberforce was forced into action in the first minute of the second half keeping out another goalbound effort. We started to get more of the ball from then on and Phillo was unlucky not to equalise with a thunderbolt after about 15 minutes. Gary made a double substitution bringing on Mark Barber for Jace Moody and Craig Hogg for Steve Lyons. These changes made an immediate impact with Hogg scoring with a no nonsense finish to equalise. A couple of minutes later and Tom Fleming burst through the defence to slot in our second. Ali Benson was a different man in the second half holding the ball up and working well with his new strike partner Hogg.

The pick of the goals was our third and Hogg's second with an imperious looping header right across their keeper after leaping like a lord at christmas at the right post to meet a cross from the left... ok, my metaphors aren't great but you get the idea!!! It was a cracking header and showed that Hogg can finish well.

Right up until the end Wilber was called upon to keep Ponte out and showed what a class act he is.

It was good to see Joe Danby come on as sub following his previous early exit at Thackley and he was briefly able to show that he is a much better player on his natural left side.

Another fraught and tense night for us travellers but the lads came good in the end and definitely deserved the win.

Weekly Round up (week 1)

Bridlington Town started off the season with a respectable draw away to Thackley. Wallace having to grab an equalizer for the seasiders just before half time after they fell behind to an early goal from McClean. Promotion favourites Farsley hit the ground running as the showed early signs of walking the league with an 8-2 win over Arnold. Elsewhere Scarborough Athletic hit the ground with their arse but luckily for the Seadogs Scot Phillips helped them bounce back up to earn a lucky 2-2 draw against a far better Lincoln Moorlans side, who will feel they were hard done by not to get all 3 points. Last season title contenders Armthorpe had a better start to the season as they strung together a rather convincing 5-0 win over Liversedge and NCELPremier new boys, Tadcaster, were involved in a rather exciting 3-3 introduction to this divison

Macth Repor Vs Thackley

A tense nervous game today for the not so impartial travelling support. Thackley have certainly built on their success towards the end of last season and have made a few good additions to their squad. They look a very competent outfit and will be there or there abouts next April.

Carl Cook had a great game today in the centre of defence and Mark Barber didn't have a bad game either. Unfortunately for Danby, he was substituted early on as he was having a torrid time against their flying left winger. Alex Rhodes was dropped back to fill in and Steve Lyons came on to steady he ship in a period where Thackley had most of the play. They scored a quality goal with a 20+ yarder that gave Wilber no chance.
We equalised through Wayne Wallace who could have had a hatrick on another day.
I think at the end of the day the scoreline was about right and we deserved a point. Talking with my fellow travellers, we think that not many teams will get much at Thackley this season.
